PARENTS' CORNER
Open up the Conversation
- Talk to your student about their college or career plans.
 - Keep an eye on your student’s study habits and grades—stay involved.
 - Encourage your student to take Advanced Placement or other challenging classes.
 - Learn about choosing a college and find a link to a free college search tool.
 - Help your student develop independence by encouraging him or her to take responsibility for balancing homework with any other activities or a part-time job.

Learn About Financial Aid
- Work with your student on filling out the FAFSA. To better understand FAFSA watch YouTube.com/FederalStudentAid.
 - Follow or like the office of Federal Student Aid at Twitter.com/FAFSA & Facebook.com/FederalStudentAid to get regular financial aid tips.
 - Check out websites like collegedata.com and collegescorecard.ed.gov which provide information about the amount and type of financial aid students receive at specific colleges as well as average debt and typical salary after graduation.
 - Help your student learn about responsibilities involved in accepting student loans. (You can find good, easy to understand information at www.studentaid.gov).

Get Active
- Plan to attend college nights, financial aid nights, and scholarship nights at JHHS with your student - beginning the conversation early is a great idea.
 - Attend college fairs with your student, but don’t take over the conversation with the college representatives. Just listen, and let your student do the talking.
 - If time and money allow, take your student to visit college campuses, preferably when classes are in session.
